About The Photographer: Ujjwal Rai

An extremely passionate hiker, mountain biker, adventurer, entrepreneur and world traveler, I am Ujjwal Rai.

A person who would do anything to go to the mountains. My life’s first solo trip was when I was 12. Ran away from home with 100 Rs in pocket. For 9 months, dish washing, cleaning, waiting, dancing, carrying loads and so on just to get to Rara lake but because of the civil war I couldn’t get there at the moment. Traveling was always my first priority. I love sharing stories, meeting new people and learning new cultures and their lifestyles.

Born and raised in a below middle class family forced me to learn how to be okay in any situation and because of the same reason I couldn’t afford traveling. So choose to become a trekking guide which led me to explore more mountainous areas of Nepal.

Walked with many many people, shared my Nepali culture with them and learned many things from the travelers. In 2013 I also met 2 ladies who asked me to join them in their team. They happened to be guides and expedition leaders too but not in any normal places but in the only frozen continent of the planet, Antarctica and Arctic . Now I work in Antarctica as a guide.

When I went trekking for the first time I was surprised by the size of the mountains and how beautiful and that was back in 2009. I came back home and started to share my stories to friends of mine but couldn’t ever show them how it actually looks on my next trip. I borrowed a Nokia 5300 phone to take photos and share. I took some photos but the size of the photo was really tiny because of the pixels of the camera and quality.

After working in the trekking industry for about 4 years one of my friends bought me a camera. The deal was to pay back slowly and I started to take photos and then in 2016 I changed camera because it was a bit heavy. I got a small mirrorless camera. Same deal (pay later because earning is very less so couldn’t afford any camera) now for the first time in 2019 I got a camera of my own for the first time. Life’s not easy 😉

Anyway, I want to share it with you here
